Between Men In Black II and III, Barry Sonnenfeld didn’t really direct much of note (unless you count RV: Runaway Vacation), but returning to the alien franchise has given his career a boost, and now Vulture reports he may direct an adaptation of the DC Comics title The Metal Men.
The comics are about William Magnus, an artificial intelligence expert who creates six different cyborgs, each made of a different metal on the periodic table. Gold is the leader and can stretch his form in an infinite number of ways. Iron is the muscle of the group, and Lead protects the group from radiation. Mercury can melt and slide into the tiniest of spaces, Platinum, the only female, could stretch or flatten her form, and Tin is the insecure cyborg.
At least those are the original incarnations, as they’ve been rebooted several times over the years, so the film version could chance things dramatically, especially as it’s not a desperately beloved property. The project doesn’t have a screenwriter attached yet, and is still in the very early stages of development. Expect this one to stay in development for a while, as it’s going to be tough turning it into a film that works.
