A week or so ago, we reported that a quintet of actresses were being looked at for the two main female roles in Horizons, the new sci-fi project from TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. Olivia Wilde, Brit Marling, Noomi Rapace and Olga Kurylenko were all in the running, but now Variety reports that Jessica Chastain is in talks to take one of the parts.
In the film, Tom Cruise will play Jack, a man who lives in the clouds above a broken Earth. He heads to the surface to repair robot drones that keep the planet safe from an alien race that has virtually wiped out humanity. The two main female roles are Jack’s right-hand-man, Victoria, who acts as his eyes and ears on his repair mission, and Julia, who was his fiancee before the alien invasion. It isn’t clear which of those roles Chastain is up for, but we’d bet on the latter. One of the other actresses mentioned above could still end up in the other role.
Chastain has come out of nowhere to become one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood. She’s starred in both The Tree Of Life and The Help this year, and will soon be seen in Take Shelter, Wilde Salome, The Help, Texas Killing Fields and Coriolanus. It’s quite a career trajectory she’s been on, and it’ll be interesting to see if she can keep it up.
