The makers of Smashed certainly want a cast of up and comers, as Variety reports they’re in talks with Mary Elizabeth Winstead (The Thing), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), and Octavia Spencer (The Help) to join the indie dramedy.
The film is about a married couple (Winstead and Paul) who can only find a connection through alcohol (hmm, I’m already thinking things aren’t going to go well for them). Their marriage takes an unusual turn when the wife decides to get sober. The wonderful Octavia Spencer will play Winstead’s best friend and sponsor, while Nick Offerman will be the principal of the elementary school where she teaches.
James Ponsoldt is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Susan Burke, with the movie said to be a loose interpretation of the 1962 Blake Edwards drama, Days of Wine and Roses. Shooting is scheduled to start in November.
