It’s easy to understand why Ice Cube is keen to get a movie about N.W.A. made, if only to remind people that he was once one of the most important voices in music, and part of a rap group that made music that gave a voice to modern urban African American youth and helped define Gangsta Rap when it was about something, and not just bling and hos. Now of course Cube has gone from shouting ‘F**k Tha Police’ to playing a policeman himself in Law & Order: SVU, so a reminder of his glory days would probably do his rep some good.
However while Cube has been talking about an N.W.A. flick for years, it’s never happened. It seems the movie may be close to coming together as The Playlist spoke to Abduction director John Singleton, who told them, “I cant talk too prematurely about the stuff Im doing because nothings come to fruition yet, but Cube and I are talking about doing the N.W.A. story The script is really, really good, and so were just figuring it out. New Line really wants to make it.”
It sounds like it’s not quite there yet, but as Singleton comes from the same area on LA as the N.W.A. boys, he’s certainly be a good choice. It might also be a good reminder to modern rappers that the genre was once truly about something, empowering the disefranchised and giving the ignored a voice.
