For a long time, Geore Clooney was set to star in a film version of The Man From UNCLE, which Steven Soderbergh has been putting together. However in the last couple weeks it’s been revealed that Clooney is out, although no reason for his departure was given.
However, while no replacement for Clooney has been announced, it appears casting is moving forward on the other main role in the film. Gorgeous George was up for the part of Napoleon Solo (played by Robert Vaughn in the 60s TV series), and now TheWrap reveals that Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Alexander Skarsgård are being eyed for the role of of Ilya Kuryakin (originally played by NCIS star David McCallam).
However it seems it’s still early in the process, as TheWarp’s source says the trio of young actors are just part of a list of 20 people being looked at by Soderbergh and Warner Bros. for the role. So don’t be suprised if someone else entirely eventually gets cast.
The original TV series follow a pair of agents from the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement – UNCLE – who are tasked with protecting the planet from the evil forces of Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity (THRUSH).
Shooting is likely to start in the spring, with reports the plot will mirror real events from the Cold War.
