It seems that with nearly every film from the 1980s already either remade or in the process of getting a new version, Hollywood is now looking to the 1990s to mine for do-over. Variety reports that Alcon Entertainment is set to remake the 1991 Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze action-thriller Point Break as a feature film for release by Warner Bros.
Alcon bosses Broderick Johnson and Andrew A. Kosove secured rights to the project the week of the original film’s 20th anniversary. The film is being fast tracked, with Kurt Wimmer on screenplay duties and a director being sought soon. Apparently the new version is set in the world of international extreme sports (rather than mainly just surfing), and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring. The press release announcing the project says ‘plot points beyond that have not been revealed by the filmmakers’ suggesting some more changes may be planned..
Johnson and Kosove commented, “Who doesn’t love the Kathryn Bigelow original and its pure heart-pounding action and thrills? Kurt Wimmer’s take infuses the story and characters with new twists and settings. We’re very excited to be in business with Kurt Wimmer, and Michael DeLuca, Chris Taylor, and John John Baldecchi.”
Alcon is the same company that a few months ago bought the sequel rights to Blade Runner and are currently putting together a movie set in that world, with Ridley Scott attached to helm.
