Although there are quite a few moons in the solar system, the one that seems to get people most excited is Jupiter’s orbiting body, Europa. Whether it’s the decree in the 2001 sequel, 2010, that “All these worlds are yours except Europa. Attempt no landing there” or the idea that extreterrestrial life may exist in a hypothetical ocean under the moon’s icy surface, it’s certainly an object designed to intrigue.
Now the movies want to go back there, with Deadline reporting that Sharlto Copley (Dictrict 9), Michael Nyquist (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days), and Asian superstar Daniel Wu are all set to star in the sci-fi pic Europa, which is looking for buyers at the recently opened Toronto International Film Festival.
Scripted by Philip Gelatt, Europa is the story of a six-person team of astronauts from various international space stations who are sent by a private sector corporation to be the first manned mission to Jupiters fourth moon. Whether this involves the discovery of any alien life there is unknown, or indeed whether there’ll be any of the weirdness that face Keir Dullea when he arrived at Jupiter in 2001.
The movie should start shooting in New York in the next couple of months, with Ecuadorian helmer Sebastian Rodero (Rage, Cronicas) behind the camera.
