While The Inbetweeners was a big success for Channel 4 on TV, few would have expected a movie version to have the biggest opening for a UK comedy ever. The film took £13.1 million in its five five days, taking the title from Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason, which made £10.43 million when it opened. Incidentally, the next biggest UK comedy openers are Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit with £9.37 million, Mamma Mia! with £6.59 million and Mr. Beans Holiday with £6.44 million, showing just how well The Inbetweeners did.
Indeed, it’s beaten most of the summers other big hitters, massively outdoing the openings of Thor, Captain America, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and most of the other major Hollywood releases. It’s a real achievement for the comedy about the four boy who’ve just left school and are off on holiday, with plenty of rude, crude fun along the way.
Producer Chris Young comments We are thrilled that The Inbetweeners Movie is the biggest opening of all time for a UK comedy. We really want to thank all the cinema goers out there who have made the film such a huge success.
It’ll be interesting to see whether The Inbetweeners Movie can keep up the momentum over the coming days, or whether all the fans went to see it in the first few days, although with such an explosive debut, it should be looking at a very healthy run. Indeed, it’s easily possibly the movie will already be in profit (even once the cinema’s portion of the box office take is discounted), so the rest of the film’s cinema run is all gravy!
