Warner Bros. has issued a press release announcing the start of production and confirming casting for Man Of Steel, but more exciting than that, they’ve also released the first official image of Henvy Cavill in his Superman suit. You can see it above, as well as click on it for a larger version, or look below for a closeup just of Cavill.
The suit seems pretty heavy on the rubber, but Cavill certainly looks good as the superhero, with the photo giving Superman a slightly sterner demeanour than the clean-cut image of Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh. While Man Of Steel isn’t likely to get as dark as Chris Nolan’s Batman films, it would seem we’re heading for something with a little more grit from the hero than we’ve seen before.
It’s also interesting that this posed pre-production shot keeps his, er, crotch, hidden. You may wonder why that’s important, but for some reason the size of Superman’s man bits has always been a topic of concern, with Bryan Singer saying the look of Routh’s downstairs parts was one of the things Warner was most concerned about during the making of Superman Returns (the worry is that if they stand out too much, it’ll upset family groups who’ll then call for a boycott). But it seems we’ll have to wait to see if Cavill has been neutered or not.
It certainly all look pretty cool, but we’ll have to wait until Summer 2013 to see if Zack Snyder’s is the Superman reboot the franchise needs.
