With The Hangover Part II out of the way, director Todd Phillips is looking for new projects, and it looks like he found one as Variety reports that his Green Hat Films banner has picked up film rights to Guy Lawson’s Rolling Stone article, Arms and the Dudes, to develop as a movie for him to direct.
The article was about 20-something stoners David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli, who managed to win a $300 million contract from the Pentagon to arm America’s allies in Afghanistan. The two made 85 deliveries of munitions to Afghanistan worth more than $66 million before their arms-dealing careers were cut short when federal agents raided their Miami Beach offices in Aug. 2007, culminating in 71 counts of fraud, due to the poor quality arms they delivered. In 2009 the duo plead guilty to one count of conspiracy and in January Diveroli was sentenced to four years in prison. You can read the article here.
Phillips is known as a comedy director, but it would appear this movie would have a slightly different tone. There is room for funniness, but at the same time it’s gonna involve more drama than Phillips has dealt with before. It’s early days though and there’s no guarantee Todd will direct.
