Until recently is appeared that after Harry Potter, Emma Watson was going to be putting acting to one side while she studied at university. However a few months ago she put her uni plans on hold, ostensibly so she’d have time to promote the last Potter flick. Tehn she took roles in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower and My Week With Marilyn, which suggested that perhaps she wanted to build her post-Poteer acting career a bit earlier than previously planned.
Now it looks like she’s got another role up her sleeves, as it seems she’s lined up to star in a new version of Beauty And The Beast that Guillermo Del Toro is putting together. It isn’t clear if Del Toro will just produce, or if he’s planning to write and direct as well (although he’ll be busy for quite a while on Pacific Rim, so unless he’s looking at this as a follow-up, producing is most likely). However fellow producer Denise Di Novi told ComingSoon that the project is in the works and Watson is attached – we’re presuming she’ll be playing the beauty rather than the beast.
It’ll be fascinating to see what Del Toro does with the classic tale, as it would seem to fit perfectly with his style – a tale that seems light on the suface but with dark, sexual undertones. Whether it’ll be more like Jean Cocteau or Disney’s version is yet to be seen.
