JJ Abrams’ Super 8 has topped the US box office with $37 million over the weekend. It’s better than expected, as many had expected it to a two-horse race to the top between Super 8 and X-Men: First Class. While the latter held up well, adding another $25.5 to its take, Super 8 pulled ahead of expectations.
Most had thought the Spielberg-infused flick would open in the $25-$30 million range, but it actually did far better than that, with many attributing that to a last minute marketing blitz by Paramount. As the film only cost $50 million to make – way less than most of the big summer movies – it should make a very healthy profit.
The only other new entry was the tween flick Judy Moody And The NOT Bummer Summer, which took $6.2 million for sventh spot on the chart. Although not a huge opening, it’s decent enough for a movie that only cost $20 million to make, and which is bound to do decent numbers on DVD.
However it’s Woody Allen’s Midnight In Paris that continues to really impress, expanding its theatre count and more than doubling its weekend gross to $6.1 million. With the movie still playing strong, it’s looking likely it’ll pass the $23.2 million gross of Vicky Cristina Barcelona in the next few weeks, which would make it Woody’s highest grossing movie since Hannah And Her Sisters in 1986.
