Thor has continued its run at the US box office, topping the chart for a second weekend with $34.5 million. Although that’s a 47.5% drops from its opening last week, that’s better than normally expected for a big movie, which routinely drops 60% from the first week to the next. It takes it to $119 million in 10 days in the US, and over $300 million worldwide, which certainly isn’t bad for a lesser known superhero with no track record on the big screen.
In second spot was Bridesmaids, which took $24.4 million on its opening weekend, significantly more than most analysts had expected. That said, quite why many people thought it would do worse is a slight mystery as it’s had glowing reviews from a lot of critics, good word of mouth from previews and with its raunchy female-led comedy, appeals to both sexes (although Hollywood still always seems shocked when women turn out in droves for a film, even though it routinely happens if the movies are good).
The only other new entry was Priest, which took a slightly lacklustre $14.6 million. Although not amazing, it is more than most had expected, particularly considering the futrisitc vampire flick has been critically slammed. Once the international box office is added in, by the end of its run Priest should have made back it $60 million budget and turn a profit.
Further down the list, Will Ferrell didn’t have too much to cheer about, as Everything Must Go took only $740,000 in its first three days for 15th place. Admittedly it did only open on 218 screens, but even so it’s not an amazing opening. Thanksfully it only cost $5 million to make.
