After months of anticipation “WHEN is Dinoshark going to come out on DVD?” I asked my Dad’s best friend last August it has finally arrived. Out of all the combinations that we’ve had so far (Dinocroc, Sharktopus, etc.), Dinoshark is clearly the most important. What makes the Dinoshark so great? Well… it’s a shark, but it’s 150 million years old and has horns, thus qualifying it as a ‘Dino’-shark.
The film addresses important ecological issues: at the beginning, global warming is shown to melt a glacier and release the Dinoshark into the sea, in a scene as terrifyingly resonant as anything from An Inconvenient Truth. Next, the Dinoshark travels to Mexico and eats the main character’s best friend. Then our hero and his girlfriend go out to fight the shark and get revenge – but I won’t give away the ending; it’s too exciting.
What else can I possibly write about Dinoshark? Oh yes – a particular let-down of the DVD is that it is completely lacking in the special features department. It would have been nice to have had the opportunity to go behind the scenes to see how the Dinoshark monster was created, but, hey, that might actually be a good thing because it’s left to the viewer’s imagination.
If you’re only going to buy one shark-related B-movie on DVD this month, Dinoshark is surely your best bet.
Overall Verdict: There’s nothing to distinguish it from the countless other films of its type – but thanks to its basic CGI, charming music, ironic winks and earnest performances, this Roger Corman production is a solid and entertaining straight-to-DVD genre movie. And it’s way better than Megashark vs. Giant Octopus.
