The cast of The Perks Of Being A Wallflower continues to grow, with Paul Rudd and Nina Dobrev joining Emma Watson, Logan Lerman and Mae Whitman, according to The Playlist. Author Stephen Chbosky is adapting his own novel for the screen, which focuses on Charlie, ‘a shy, unpopular teenager who, through a series of letters to an anonymous person, explores his awkward adolescence including drug use, abuse and sexuality in 1991 Pittsburgh.’ Initially living life on the sidelines – which gives him a unique perspective – there comes a time when he realises perhaps it’s time to take centre stage.
The edgy content matter has seen the book placed on the list of novels that people have most asked to have removed from US libraries, suggesting this is not your usual family friendly coming-of-age tale.
There’s no confirmation on what roles Rudd and Vampire Diaries star Dobrev will take, but it’s believed the former will be Charlie’s English teacher, Bill, while the latter will play Candace, Charlie’s sister. Lerman is in the lead role, with Watson taking her first steps outside the Harry Potter franchise as his older friend, Sam. Shooting it set to begin next month.
