The teaming of Michael Mann and Paul Haggis is certainly an interesting proposition, and it looks like it may happen as the duo are currently working together to develop the thriller Gold, which THR describes as being ‘in the vein of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, set around a ruthless search for the precious metal.’
Whether referencing the classic Humphrey Bogart flick really means much is debatable, as it could just be a way of trying to give the film some class by association.
Haggis was originally planning to direct the film himself, after being drawn to the spec script by Patrick Massett and John Zinman. However he has now stepped back and will only produce, with Mann eyeing it to direct. However it’s just one of several projects Mann has bubbling away. He hasn’t shot anything since Public Enemies, but has medieval battle film Agincourt, the gangster film Big Tuna and a biopic of photographer Robert Capa bubbling away. It isn’t certain which will be next for him.
No actors are attached to Gold yet, although they’re apparently trying to attract the attention of Leo DiCaprio.
