Despite numerous new releases in the US this weekend, it was Hop that stayed on top, taking another $21.6 million, giving it a solid but not amazing $68.2 million after 10 days in cinemas. In second spot was the Russell Brand film Arthur, which many had expected to come in the $17-$20 million range, but disappointed with only $12.6 million. Many suspect it’s because with Brand not as well known in the States, except for being a bit crazy, the marketing focus on his antics failed to draw punters.
In third and fourth spots were the action-thriller Hanna and inspirational drama Soul Surfer, which both got off to solid starts, making around what was expected of them in the $11-$12 million range. However the real disappointment was the James Franco, Natalie Portman and Danny McBride film Your Highness, which tanked with $9.5 million to score sixth place on the chart. It’s a disappoinment and way below most stoner comedies, with some thinking the marketing failed to capture its anarchic spirit, while others suggest that the medieval theme way have been to blame, as while it can boost some movies, it’s been poison for others.
Fox meanwhile will celebrate, as while they took the slightly unusual step of launching Rio on the international circuit before it reached the US, it made $55 million in 72 markets, marking the first real hit of the year, as that’s twice what any other movie has made during one weekend internationally this year.
