Will & Jaden Smith To Star In Shyamalan Sci-fi – The father and son team head for the future

5th April 2011 By Tim Isaac

The Smiths are becoming less a family and more an entertainment congolmerate, with Will, Jada, Jaden and Willow working together to take over the world of showbiz. Now it’s been announced that Jaden is set to star opposite his father, Will, in an untitled sci-fi adventure for director M. Night Shyamalan. And just so it’s a proper family affair, Jada Pinkett Smith will produce (and I’d imagine Willow will be around somewhere, probably running the studio making the movie).

Based on a screenplay by Shyamalan and Gary Whitta, the film is set 1,000 years to the future, and follows a young boy who has to navigate an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes. Hmm, sounds like 12-year-old Jaden really liked I Am Legend and so has got his father to get him one of his own.

Although currently untitled, Shyamalan had been referring to this one as One Thousand A.E., although that’s apparently changed. Originally Will wasn’t going to be in this one (he was solely set to produce), with Jaden as the son but someone else as the father. However the Fresh Prince is now onboard.

To be honest, the more involved Will is the better, as he’s known to be very hands-on in the development process, and may be able to tone down some of Shyamalan’s hyperbole and help him create something better than either The Happening or Last Airbender, and actually show off the talent the director undeniably has.
