After a couple weekends where the big releases have disappointed at the box office, we finally have one where the movie that came out on top outdid expectations. Hop was expected to win the weekend, but with $38 million in its first three days, it outperformed most analysts’ predictions, setting it up for a good run into Easter, where its bunny theme should ensure great box office.
Source Code came second with $15 million, about in line with expectations, and not a bad start considering it only cost $32 million to make. Insidious meanwhile came in third with $13.4 million, which again isn’t a bad start for a horror film that doesn’t obviously play to a teen audience. However just to prove audiences don’t necesarily listen to the critics, while both Insidious and Source Code got pretty strong reviews, Hop just provoked sighs but won out the weekend nevertheless.
And if Warner was hoping Sucker Punch’s weak start would be softened with a long run at the box office they’ll be disappointed, as the film plummeted from second to seventh spot on the chart and took in nearly 70% less than it did last weekend.
Take a look below for the top 10 at the US box office for the weekend of April 1st-3rd.
