With Steve Carell having finished work on his final few episodes of The Office, he’s been busy filling up his schedule with movie roles, and despite already having a pretty full dance card, he’s signed up for Seeking A Friend For The End of The World, and he could well be joined by Keira Knightley.
The film, which would be the directorial debut of screenwriter Lorene Scafaria (Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlise), takes place at a time when mankind is forced to absorb the fact that an incoming asteroid will end humanity. Carell plays a man suddenly alone when his wife leaves in a panic. His high school sweetheart writes to him saying she wants to be with him when the world stops. His neighbor (Knightley) accompanies him on the road trip as love blooms at the worst possible time.
Although the doomsday scenario doesn’t exactly sound very funny, it does apparently have a bit of a romantic comedy vibe (quite frankly, a lot of rom-com could have been considerably improved by all the characters being wiped out by an asteroid).
Carell seems firmly aboard, while Knightley is currently in negotiations.
