If you’re a young actress, an Oscar nomination can certainly help your career, and that’s definitely true of True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld, who in the last few months Hollywood has been lining up to be a major teen star, even though the Coen Brothers flick is the only movie she’s been in. Now Deadline reports that she is attached to a new spec script entitled Sleeping Beauty, which takes a revisionist look at the classic fairy tale character.
Lindsay Devlin wrote the new take on the sotry, which concentrates on the title character while she is asleep, trying to escape her dream world. That’s probably a good thing, as you can’t imagine feminists would be very happy if they just stuck with the original tale of a woman who falls asleep and then just has to hang around waiting for a man to sort things out. Indeed while it’s tied to the Sleeping Beauty story, it sounds as much Alice In Wonderland and Oz as it does anything else. The project is currently being shopped around to financiers, and is expected to find a home fairly quickly.
Disney is also developing its own Sleeping Beauty project entitled Maleficent, which is being written by Alice in Wonderland screenwriter Linda Woolverton. And yes, I’m wondering to whether the world really wants all these fairy tale films, especially with numerous Oz, Snow Whites, and a Hansel & Gretel doing the round.
Steinfeld is also attached to Forgotten for Paramount Pictures, about a 16-year old whose memory is erased at 4:33 every night. The following morning, all she can remember are events from her future. After meeting a new boy at school, London becomes frustrated that she cant seem to find him in her memory of things to come.
