While Warner is apparently saying it’s happy with the result, the likelihood is they’d have preferred it if their much trumpeted $75 million fantasy, Sucker Punch, hadn’t been beaten to the top spot at the US box office this weekend by a $17 million kids’ sequel, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.
As with last year’s first film, Wimpy Kid has surprised many with its box office strength, grossing $24 million in its first three days. However it is based on an incredibly popular series of books, which have perhaps gone under the radar of many box office watchers, and therefore left them scratching their heads as to why so many youngsters want to see the film.
That left Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch to pick up second spot with a rather underwhelming $19 million, lower than nearly everyone’s expectations and the director’s worst live-action start yet.
Those were the only new entries, although the holdovers held up very well, with Limitless and The Lincoln Lawyer dropping less than 20% from last weekend, suggesting good word of mouth.
