John Travolta and Nicolas Cage’s movies tend to be incredibly hit and miss, but everyone liked them together in 1997’s Face/Off, so why not get back together again? In fact, if it all works out, Vulture says they could be reteaming twice, in Shrapnel and Sea Trial.
The latter is based comes from writer-director Raymond De Felitta (City Island) and is based on the novel of the same name by Frank De Felitta, Raymond’s father. The story centres on a couple who takes what they think will be a pleasure cruise and become enslaved by the ship’s captain and his wife.
Shrapnel meanwhile was announced last September with John McTiernan (Die Hard) attached to direct. It about a Bosnian soldier who turns a hunting trip into a war game to get revenge on the American soldier who badly wounded him.
There are slight issues with both at the moment though. Sea Trial is yet to find funding, and while they want to start shooting Shrapnel in June, McTiernan is currently out on bail awaiting an appeal, after being fined $100,000 and sentenced to a year in prison after being found guilty of lying to the FBI during the Anthony Pellicano wiretapping case. At first this looked like it would nix him from Shrapnel (and perhaps shelve the whole project), but he’s now apparently back in the saddle and the producers are obviously praying he won’t get banged up before he completes work on the movie.
As yet, neither Cage or Travolta has signed up for either film, and it’s not even certain whether they’re trying to play opposite one another or want the same roles. Either way, currently both have expressed interest in the movie. it would be good to see them back together, attempting to recapture some of the fun of Face/Off/
