Hepburn & Tracy, Hudson & Day, Astaire & Rogers – there have been many great screen partnerships over the years, and now we have another to add to the list – Robert De Niro and Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson. Having appeared alongside one another in Righteous Kill, the duo are now planning to reteam for the gritty police drama Freelancers.
Deadline reports that Forest Whitaker is also in talks to come aboard this tale from writer Philippe Casseus, which follows the son of a slain NYPD officer who decides to join the Police Academy. After graduating, 50 Cent’s character finds a mentor in his father’s former partner (De Niro). Together, they become part of a rogue task force to rid New York City’s streets of crime. It is not known at this time who Forest Whitaker will be playing in the movie.
Is it just me, or does this sound like another of the many movies where De Niro looked at the paycheque and didn’t bother to read the script? But hey, maybe he and Fiddy can make it work, and it’ll be like the De Niro and Pacino scene in Heat, but for two hours. Hmm, or maybe not.
Freelancers begins production on April 18th in New Orleans.
