Although there’s been talk of a Bad Santa sequel pretty much since the first film opened, with Billy Bob Thornton often mentioning it as a distinct possibility, it’s now become official that the actors is in talks to star in Bad Santa 2.
Back in December it was reported that the company that recently bought Miramax was keen to exploit its back catalogue with sequels, but as Miramax founders Bob and Harvey Weinstein retained the right to approve sequels to any movies made under their tenure with the indie studio, the new owners were quick to team up with The Weinstein Company and put follow-ups to the likes of Bad Santa, Rounders and Shakespeare in Love into development.
The Weinsteins obviously feel there’s plenty mroe milage in Bad Santa, with a spokesperson for their company telling TheWrap, “We feel that it’s a Christmas perennial for the R-rated crowd. Everyone loves the character and Billy Bob is excited to be in talks with us.”
It isn’t clear when filming will start on Bad Santa 2, or if Bad Santa director Terry Zwigoff will return to helm the sequel. It also isn’t known if a writer has been hired to write the script for Bad Santa 2.
