Yesterday we posted some quotes of director Zack Snyder talking about his upcoming Superman reboot. However what we didn’t mention at the time was the confusion over whether Kevin Costner had signed to star as Jonathan ‘Pa’ Kent or not. An early version of the LA Times interview seemed to confirm it, but a later update recanted and said he was only rumoured.
The backtracking seems to be down to timing, with final negotiations concluding and those involved not wanting the LA Times to jump the gun, as THR now reports that Costner has closed a deal to appear in the movie. He now officially joins a cast that includes Henry Cavill as Clark Kent and Diane Lane as Supe’s earthly mother.
Casting Superman’s parents so early suggests they’re going to play a big part in the movie, and be more than just the homely mid-west figures in Clark’s background. Indeed Warner issued this statement about the character when they confirmed Costner’s casting, ‘Jonathan Kent is the only father figure Clark has ever had, the man who was there to help Clark understand what he was meant to do in the world as Superman. Kevin will be able to communicate the quiet strength of this rural American man who raised the greatest superhero of all time.’
