There’s been an awful lot of interest but not a huge amount of info on the direction director Zack Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan are taking Superman with their planned reboot of the iconic character. However now Snyder has been talking with The LA Times about the movie (probably called Man Of Steel), which stars Henry Cavill as the man from Krypton, and says that the new film will not be tied to any previous films featuring the character, unlike 2006’s Superman Returns, which was a semi-sequel to the Christopher Reeve Superman flicks (Singer said it was a story that could have followed Superman II).
Snyder says, “Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we’re making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there’s been no other Superman movies. If you look at ‘Batman Begins,’ there’s that structure, there’s the canon that we know about and respect but on other hand there’s this approach that pre-supposes that there haven’t been any other movies. In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies.”
The director also alluded to the action of Superman, saying, “Our Superman, he’s got things to figure out but he’s a physical cat.” That’s good to know, as many had wondered whether with Nolan on-board things would get quite angsty, as they are for Batman, which isn’t generally what you think of when it comes to Superman.
The director also suggests this version of Superman will go beyond what has been seen before, “Superman is the one constant in the universe. You know that if you do Superman right – or at least if you do him with respect – you know you end up with something great…. [but] in some ways [beyond] that is virgin territory. No one knows what that is. In some ways Superman is the most recognizable superhero on the planet but also the most unknown. Just what he can be? People have preconceived ideas about him but probably all of them are wrong.”
It’s all pretty intriguing, but let’s hope the film can live up to Snyder’s slightly overblown claim that the casting will be consistent in its awesomeness. The movie is due in cinemas December 2012.
