While the words ‘Brendan Fraser’ normally mean you’ll be getting him playing an idiot meathead in a dreadful movie, it looks like he’s trying something a tiny but different for a change, as Variety reports he’s officially signed up for Whole Lotta Sole (he had been rumoured for it before). Gods and Monsters proved he can act if he wants to, so maybe we’ll get to see some of that talent again with this – although looking at the plot, there’s no guarantee.
The low budget ($5.5 million) flick is about a young man who robs a fish shop in order to pay off a gambling debt. However the heist inevitably goes wrong when it turns into a hostage situation. As the cheesy title suggests, George and Thomas Gallagher’s script is a comedy, with Fraser playing the shopkeeper, who it turns out is on the run from his gangster father in law.
Terry George will direct – and it’s certainly a bit different to his previous Hotel Rwanada and Reservation Road – while Jay Russell, director of Ladder 49 and The Water Horse, will produce. The film will shoot in Northern Ireland, although it’s not clear if that mean Fraser will be trying to pull the accent off.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers was previously attached to the movie, but it doesn’t look like he’s involved anymore.
