Almost since Cradle Of Life came out theres been talk of making another sequel or rebooting the Tomb Raider Franchise. However, while there have been all sorts of whispers and rumours, theres been little thats concrete. Things have changed a little though, as the movie rights have changed hands, with GK Film picking up the franchise and planning a new movie.
Deadline has published the press release about it, which says GK Film plans to create daring new adventures for the young and dynamic Lara Croft, with the company hoping to release whatever they come up with in 2013. Reading between the lines, it appears the plan may be to take things younger and back to the beginning of Lara Croft, as the release mentions that In Dec 2010, Square Enix subsidiary, Crystal Dynamics, revealed a new game for TOMB RAIDER based around the origins of the Lara Croft story.
Despite GKs relationship with Angelina Jolie, which started with The Tourist and will continue through her directorial debut and a couple of other project, I think its safe to say we wont see her back in the tight outfits. Expect someone younger, less well known and of course cheaper.
Tomb Raider is definitely a franchise that can work on screen, but GK needs something with a bit more life than the two movies Paramount made. Hopefully theyll find a way to make it work.
