Although this is one of those rumours where you’d normally expect it to be debunked at any moment, it comes from a reliable source, so there’s probably some substance to it. THR says that producer Christopher Nolan and director Zack Snyder are viewing Viggo Mortensen as a ‘person of interest’ to play the villain role in the upcoming new Superman movie.
For a while now, Mortensen has been in negotiations for Snow White and the Huntsman. If he signs on for that, it may be tough to do Superman too, but Warner and Universal might be able to work out the scheduling. So what Man Of Steel role will it be? Well, while there were recent rumours General Zod wouldn’t be in the movie after intial reports said he would, it appears that’s the role they want Mortensen for.
It should be noted though, that as with last week’s info that the makers of Superman are interested in Kevin Costner to play Clark Kent’s earthly father, it’s a long way from getting either actor to sign on. Indeed at the moment it’s unclear if either of them have even been approached about the roles, or if they’re just floating about on a wish-list somewhere.
General Zod, of course, was most famously portrayed by Terence Stamp in the Richard Donner Superman films. Hes a Kryptonian so he has the same powers as Superman and this report falls in line with recent info that one of the main female roles that was being cast is Ursa, a known associate of Zod. Mortensen would seem a good choice for the role, but he’s known for being picky, so even if the producers want him, it doesn’t mean they’ll get him.
We’ll have to wait and see.
