As many expected, the big winner at the Oscars turned out to be The King’s Speech, which took Best Picture, a much anticipated Best Actor award for Colin Firth, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, with Tom Hooper beating out David Fincher, who’d been hotly tipped for The Social Network. It wasn’t a clean sweep though, with several other movies getting a look in.
While losing Best Director, Social Network neverthless picked up three awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Original Score.
Rather surprisingly, while it didn’t pick up any of the big awards, tying King’s Speech for most number of awards won on the night was Inception, which picked up four gongs, suggesting voters wanted to acknowledge it, even if it had been largely ignored in the nominations for the major categories. It picked up awards for Cinematography, Visual Effects, Sound Mixing and Sounds Editing.
Among the other major winners were Natalie Portman, who won Best Actress for Black Swan, Christian Bale, who picked up Best Supporting Actor for The Fighter, while Melissa Leo won Best Supporting Actress for the same film.
