During a weekend that was about celebrating the movies at the Oscars, there wasn’t too much cheer at the US box office, with none of the new entries breaking out as a hit, leaving Gnomeo and Juliet, in its third weekend of release, to top the chart. The CGI flick took the number one spot with $14 million, which isn’t bad for a movie on its third week of release, but is less than we’d normally expect for a chart topper. Indeed, it’s thought to be one of the least-attended February weekends of the last decade.
The Farelly’s new comedy, Hall Pass, starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis, came in second with $13.2 million. It was below expectations, and below most comparable comedies. However Hall Pass was an unabashed hit compared to Drive Angry, a movie that from the moment it was announced seemed to think the fact it was shot in 3D would paper-over any shortcomings. Unfortunately audiences are far more savvy about 3D than they were a year ago, and so Drive Angry could only rake up $5 million in ticket sales, despite the premium prices for 3D tickets.
Once more though, The King’s Speech was the standout, with its gross increasing this weekend in anticipation of its Oscar wins. With it likely to see even more of an uptick in business following its Academy Award success, who knows how much it’ll gross by the time its cinema run ends.
Here’s the US box office top 10 for the weekend of February 25th-27th.
