Remember Soapdish? Want a remake? Well, if you answered yes to both those questions, you’re probably the only person in the world who did, but Paramount seems to think there’s enough juice behind the idea as THR report they want to give it another go around.
To be honest, Soapdish isn’t that bad a movie, but why they’d want to remake it is anyone’s guess. I suspect Alan Griesman has something to do with it, who produced the original and will reprise that role here (I’d be willing to bet he’s got part-ownership of the concept and has been the one pushing the remake, in the hope it’ll be a cash cow). Rob Reiner will also produce.
Actor-writer Ben Schwartz, who was last seen in The Other Guys and Mystery Team, has been hired by Paramount to write the remake for the 1991 comedy Soapdish. A former freelance writer for David Letterman, who’s also helped with the script for Robot Chicken, Schwartz is doing a pretty good job of building a successful career on both the acting and writing fronts.
The original 1991 movie, which was headlined by Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Robert Downey Jr., Teri Hatcher and Whoopi Goldberg, chronicled the behind-the-scenes antics of a popular afternoon soap opera.
