It’s been announced that Steve Carell is attached to star in Mandate Pictures’ Dogs of Babel, a project that’s been doing the rounds in Hollywood for a couple of years, but now looks like it might actually get made. Writer Jamie Linden (Ten Year, Dear John, We Are Marshall) has adapted the best-selling novel for the big screen. As yet the movie has no director, but that’s likely to change very soon.
It’s a slightly more dramatic role for Carell than we’ve normally seen, and should allow him to show off his acting chops while also engaging in comedy. With the star leaving The Office before the end of the season, he’s certainly filling up his film slate, as it was only a couple of days ago he signed on for Great Hope Spring, opposite Meryl Streep.
Carolyn Parkhurst’s novel, The Dogs of Babel, is a tragic yet beautiful story of love and loss. The story follows Paul Iverson, a linguistics professor, who returns home one day to find his wife dead in their backyard. Police rule her death an accident, but Paul is not quite sure. The only witness to her demise is their dog, Lorelei. In Paul’s grief-stricken search for answers, he endeavours to teach Lorelei to talk in the hopes that he can uncover what happened the day his wife died. (Source: THR)
