A couple of weeks ago it was rumoured that DJ Caruso, director of I Am Number Four, was in talks to direct the long-in-development Preacher. The helmer has now revealed on his Twitter account that he has completed a deal to direct the movie, saying “My deal just closed on Preacher. Going back to the dark side and pretty fucking pumped!”
Sam Mendes was originally attached to direct, until he left the project to direct James Bond 23. Darren Aronofsky also seemed to be a contender last autumn, although it seems a deal was never made. Since his Tweet, Caruso’s participation has been confirmed by THR, amongst others.
John August wrote the screenplay, which is adapted from the Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon graphic novel. The story centres on a Texas preacher named Jesse Custer, who becomes possessed by a supernatural entity that is have angel and half demon. After this spirit forces him to murder his entire congregation, he goes on a journey to literally find God, who has abandoned his place in heaven.
There’s no news on when it might shoot.
