Following the excellent Rabbit Proof Fence in 2002, about the old Aussie policy of removing many Aborigine children from their parents to be ‘civilised’ and trained up as staff for white people, comes another movie about a rather dodgy policy concerning dispossed kids that involved Australia. This time us Brits are involved too, as it’s about the deportation of thousands of poor UK kids from care homes in Blighty all the way to Australia and other Commonwealth nations, mainly to save money. Many were told their parents were dead when in fact they weren’t, and promised a life of sunshine and oranges, when what many got was severe abuse, hard labour and a life in institutions. The film follows Margaret Humphreys (Emily Watson), the woman who almost single-handedly brought the issue into the public gaze and managed to reunite hundreds of families.
