Previously known as Cowboys For Christ, The Wicker Tree has been renamed so it’s closer to The Wicker Man, the movie it’s the ‘spiritual sequel’ to. Robin Hardy is once more at the helm (it’s only the third film he’s made, the other being Wicker Man and 1989’s The Fantasist), based on his own novel about a group of Texan missionaries who set off to Scotland to spread the word of God. They come across a community that as part of its May Day celebrations chooses its May Queen as well as a boy called The Laddie. They all have a party and then the next day the Pagan goings on take a sinister turn when the real reason for choosing the Laddie is revealed. While not a direct Wicker Man sequel, the parallels are clear, not least the presence of Christopher Lee, who’s apparently credited as ‘Old Man’, but many assume it’s a cameo for Lord Summerisle (lee was supposed to have a bigger part, but it was hacked down after he suffered an injury). There’s still no release date set, but take a look at the trailer below.
