Rosamund Pike seems pretty popular with Warner Brothers/Legendary Pictures at the moment, as last week it was reported she was on the shortlist for a major role in the new Superman movie, and now she’s joined the cast of their upcoming sequel, Wrath of the Titans, portraying Andromeda.
Alexa Davalos portrayed Andromeda in last year’s Clash of the Titans, but she’s unavailable to return for the sequel. However while Andromeda was a minor role in Clash, the part is apparently a lot bigger in Wrath, so there should be more to sink her teeth into.
In Greek mythology, Andromeda was chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster, after Poseidon sent the creature to ravage Ethiopia as punishment for Andromeda’s mother boasting that her daughter was more beautiful than the Nereids (the children of the sea god Nereus). She became a damsel in distress for Perseus on his way back from slaying Medusa, and was later his wife.
So does this mean Pike won’t be in Superman? Well Deadline says to scratch her off the Man Of Steel list as she’s going all Greek mythological, but as the Sam Worthington starring sequel starts shooting very shortly and there’s no news on when Superman might go into production, it’s possible she may be able to do both.
Jonathan Liebesman will direct Wrath of the Titans from a script by David Johnson. A release date of March 30, 2012 has already been set.
