On Friday we reported on a list of actresses the producers of the new Superman movie are supposedly looking at for the female lead role, including Alice Eve, Diane Kruger and Rosamund Pike. However the news that interested most people was that the part wasn’t Lois Lane.
While it was largely assumed that it would still be a love interest for Superman – leading many to believe it would be Lana Lang – another interesting possibility has been thrown up by Latino Review. They say an insider has told them the role Eve, Kruger and Pike are up for is Ursa, the Kryptonian criminal who was locked up in a floating square along with General Zod (as seen in Superman: The Movie and when Zod, Ursa and Non became the main villains of Superman II).
In many ways it makes sense, as Hollywood nearly always wants a female love interest to be younger than the man (it’s sexist and silly, but it’s the way Tinsel Town works), and 34-year-old Kruger, 32-year-old Pike and 29-year-old Eve are all older than 27-year-old Cavill. It also makes sense of earlier rumours that General Zod would be the villain. Director Zack Snyder seemed to dismiss those, saying, “For now, it’s just a rumour”, but if it’s Ursa who’s the main baddie, it would explain why some thought it was Zod, and why Snyder could suggest it wasn’t, while not dismissing the idea entirely.
At the moment, absolutely none of this has been confirmed, so it could turn out Latino Review’s got it wrong and that Eve, Kruger and Pike are up for a completely different role. It should also be noted that while Friday’s news that the actresses weren’t auditioning for Lois Lane led many to wonder whether that meant Lois wouldn’t be in the new movie at all (in the same way Mary-Jane has been jettisoned for Gwen Stacy in the Spider-man reboot), Latino Review says she will be in the film, it’s just that Kruger and co. are up for a different part.
