While many box office analysts had expected it to be a race for first place at the US box office between The Roommate and Sanctum, it wasn’t much of a competition in the end, with the former coming in the clear winner. The Roommate took $15.6 million over the weekend, showing that while many teen horror/thrillers have struggled recently, there’s still money to be made from these low budget flicks, with The Roommate taking almost as much money at the box office in three days as it cost to make.
Sanctum was relegated to second place with $9.2 million. To be honest, for a realtivel small action film movie with no big stars that’s not a horrific opening, but it had been hoped that with premiums for 3D tickets, over 100 IMAX movies showing the flick and James Cameron’s name emblazoned over the advertising as a producer, the film would make more cash. However with a budget of only $30 million, it should still end up in profit by the time it hits Blu-ray.
Those were the only new entries in the top 10, with most other films simply slipping down two places. The exceptions were The Rite, which plummeted from first to sixth place, suggesting there was little positive word of mouth on the pic, and The King’s Speech, which actually moved up a spot to fourth on the chart, largely because while most other older movies dropped 35-50% from last weekend, The King’s Speech was off less that 25%.
