For decades now, people (mainly Francis Ford Copolla) have been trying to get a film version of Jack Kerouac’s classic On The Road made. However most people were happy to leave it in literary form, feeling that no movie version could capture the spirit of the book.
Things changed last year though when Walter Salles came on board to direct, funding was found, a cast assembled and shooting began. Now the first images from the movie have appeared, featuring Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart and Sam Riley as Dean Moriarty, Marylou and Sal Paradise respectively.
There are still a lot of questions over the movie, not least whether despite having the looks, Hedlund has the verve and charm for Moriarty (he seemed to lack both in Tron legacy), a character who can draw people in, but isn’t actually that pleasant. Sam Riley seems a good choice as the idealistic Sal, while at least Kristen Stewart appears far more animated in the pics than she has in the Twilight movies.
On The Road should be in cinemas later this year.
