A year or so ago, it seemed that Zach Galifianakis was signing up to star in literally every film going. Now he appears to have calmed down a bit, but he does have a new flick that he’s in talks to star in, RIPD.
The movie has been in development for a while with Ryan Reynolds attached to the lead role and Red director Robert Schwentke helming. The supernatural comic book adaptation is about a division of the police that is staffed entirely by the dead. Reynolds will will a cop killed in the line of duty, who enlists in the supernatural squad in the hope of being able to stop his own killer.
Galifianakis meanwhile is in talk to play the co-lead, according to the LA Times, although there’s no news on exactly what the role is (it does sound like the flick will be a ghostly buddy cop comedy, so presumably he’ll play Reynolds’ partners on the RIPD squad).
One thing worth noting is that the news has led to speculation that the Deadpool movie may be dead in the water. Reynolds previously hinted that he may have to choose between RIPD and Deadpool, and with Galifianakis in talk for the former, it appears than one has more steam. Of course this is pure speculation at the moment – with X-Men: First Class arriving in cinemas this year and The Wolverine next year, there’s a decent chance Fox wouldn’t want another X-Men related flick in cinemas until 2013 anyway, giving Reynolds time to do both. We’ll have to wait and see.
