How has it taken this long for The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase to make it to DVD? However the cult family flick has now been released on digital disc, and thanks to Strawberry Media and Spirit Entertainment, we have five copies of the DVD to give away.
Based on Joan Aikens book, The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase is set in a parallel version of the 1820s, during the reign of the fictitious James III, where the steam train (and car) has already been invented and wolves roam the land, having come through the Channel Tunnel (an idea not as preposterous as it sounds, as its known a road under the tunnel was suggested to Napoleon in the 1790s, and it was seriously attempted in the mid 19th Century).
Against this backdrop, young Bonnie, Sylvia and Simon must battle the evil intentions of the loathsome governess Slightcarp (Stephanie Beacham) and Mr Grimshaw (Mel Smith), who set about installing themselves as the people in charge of the grand home, Willoughby Chase; getting rid of anyone who is a challenge to their authority including the children. The kids end up being interned in a local orphanage, as well as having to endure a two month, cross-country trek to London, avoiding the ravenous wolves along the way.
Its a dark film, that may be a bit scary for the youngest members of the family, but should enchant older kids, as well as their parents (just ignore the fact that the wolves are obviously dogs wearing furry coats).
