It certainly helps when you’re the only major new film release around, and that’s certainly the case with No Strings Attached, which pulled in a decent $20.3 million to top the US box office this weekend. The Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman comedy, about friends who decide to have no strings sex but find it more difficult than they imagined, came in about where it was expected to, and as it’s believed it only cost $25 million to make, should end up making a decent profit by the end of its run.
With the major Golden Globe winners – The Social Network and The Kids Are Alright – having been and gone from cinemas, there was less room for movies to be given a bump by them this year. However winners such as Black Swan and The Fighter saw relatively minor drops in their box office.
However it was The King’s Speech, which won Colin Firth a Best Actor Globe, that held up best, making almost exactly the same this weekend as it did last weekend, no doubt helped by its umpteen BAFTA noms. If it does well in the Oscar nominations and ceremony, there’s a good chance that the it’ll cross the $100 million mark before the end of its run.
