Despite their success with Inception, it seems that Warner Bros has pretty much given up on movies based on original concepts, as THR reports they’ve got a slew of remakes and reboots in the works, and most notably are pushing forward with a new version of Lethal Weapon by hiring a writer.
The focus on do-overs has apparently come about following the departure of Warner executive Jessica Goodman at the end of 2010. Warner Bros. is now reorganizing her portfolio of projects, which will be getting new leases on life. First off, former LAPD detective Will Beall has been hired to script a Lethal Weapon reboot. He made waves with his screenplay, Tales From The Gangster Squad, which is currently in development, and has apparently been asked to ensure his Lethal Weapon script retains the buddy-comedy hard-R edge of the original..
However the Mel Gibson-Danny Glover flick isn’t the only movie Warner has its sights of for a remake. For quite a long time, there’s been talk of new Dirty Dozen, Westworld and Tarzan movies, and now it appears the studio is getting more serious about those, and THR also says The Wild Bunch and Oh God! may be getting makeovers, although it appears all of these are still at a very early stage.
Let’s just hope there are at least one or two movie on Warner’s slate that are based on original ideas, or we really will reached the point where Hollywood has run out of ideas.
