Ricky Gervais has been getting decent reviews for his second stint as host of the Golden Globes (after saying he never do it again following last year’s ceremony), but the real question is, who won the actual gongs? Longtime Movie Muser readers will know we’re not big fans of the Golden Globes, which are essentially pointless awards puffed up into something that looks bigger and more important that it is (you can read more about that here), but there’s no doubt people see them as an indicator of the Oscars.
While The King’s Speech had the most nominations, it was The Social Network that grabbed the most awards, picking up Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score, which would seem to bode well for it at the Academy Awards. However it wasn’t all bad news for The King’s Speech, with Colin Firth picking up Best Actor (Drama) – although it would have been more of a shock if he hadn’t, as he’s been winning just about everything going.
While The Kids Are Alright probably deserved its Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) award, its achievement would probably have been sweeter if the list of other nominees had been stronger. Natalie Portman meanwhile picked up Best Actress (Drama), with Paul Giamatti winning Best Actor (Musical Or Comedy) for Barney’s Version and Annette Bening picking up the female equivalent for The Kids Are Alright.
