For the past few years, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has flirted on the edges of the big leagues, with reucrring TV roles in the likes of Supernatural and Grey’s Anatomy leading to film gigs such as Watchmen, PS I Love You and The Losers. With the likes of Red Dawn, The Fields and The Courier coming up, we should be hearing plenty more from him, especially as Variety reports he’s also landed the starring role in Dibbuk Box, from Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures.
He will play a recently divorced father whose youngest duaghter becomes strangely connected to an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. As the child’s behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, the father senses a dark presence building, until he realises the box was built to contain a Dibbuk – a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.
It all sounds a little Outer Limits, but producer Raimi obviously hopes it could be fun and scary, and that Morgan is the man to take us on that journey. Danish helmer Ole Bornedal (The Subsitute) will direct from a script by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White (inevitably it’s said to be based on true events). Dibbuk Box is already set for a Halloween timed release on October 28th, so they’d better start shooting soon!
