As the new Judge Dredd movie has been shooting for a while know, it would seem very late to only just be hearing that Lena Headey has been cast as the main villain in the movie, but then Dredd seems to be working to its own rules, as the first picture from the film was released before most people knew it had begun filming.
However the aptly named Judge Dredd Movie News says Lena Headey has indeed been cast (and other sites are saying they’d heard similar rumours, but not strongly enough to publish them before now) as Madeline Madrigal, aka Ma-Ma. The script apparently says the character is in her late 50s or early 60s, but you can imagine the money men not thinking that was sexy enough and going for Headey instead. She will have Ma-Ma’s tradermark scar, but she won’t be aged.
The film takes us to the streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of the elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot if necessary. Ma-Ma meanwhile is a gang leader whose goons over run the Peach Tree City Block, with Dredd sent in to sort things out.
Pete Travis (Vantage Point) is directing from a script by Alex Garland (28 Days Later). It should be noted though that currently Headey still hasn’t been officially announced for the film, so treat it as rumour for the time being.
