The Coens’ True Grit pushed past Little Fockers to grab the top spot at the US box office this weekend, making it one of the most successful westerns of recent memory, outgrossing the likes of Unforgiven, Maverick and Brokeback Mountain. That certainly isn’t bad for a film where many had wondered whether it would find an audience at all. It’s now the highest grossing Coen movie ever in the US.
The only brand new release to reach the top 10 was the Nicolas Cage flick Season Of The Witch, which grossed $10.7 million to place third. While not an amazing start, it’s about where the distributor expected, recognising that medieval movies often struggle in the US market.
After expanding from a small release in LA and Nashville to nationwide, Country Strong shot up the charts to gross $7.3 million over the weekend and reach the top 10 for the first time, in sixth place. While not bad, the Gwyneth Paltrow country music fest will be hoping for some Oscar noms to keep the grosses up, which certainly helped Crazy Heart last year.
