With a reume including Hellraiser: Inferno, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Day The Earth Stood Still, Scott Derrickson doesn’t exactly have the world on its feet, eager to hear what he’ll be doing next, however that hasn’t stopped Relativity signing him for the biblical tale, Goliath.
As you may have guessed from the title, the film is a retelling of the story of David and Goliath, which will be set in the past, but with contemporary sensibilities. The screenplay, by John D. Payne and Patrick McKay, follows a young Shepard named David who is set on an epic chase to save his own life and the lives of his people when the fierce warrior Goliath begins tracking down a foretold king of the Israelites. David and Goliath will battle in the climax, presumably with the former bringing out his trusty slingshot.
The look of the project is said to be in the same vein as 300, with an action feel reminiscent of The Bourne Identity and Taken.
To be honest, it all sounds pretty dreadful, like a studio exec’s fever dream, where he hope to make a movie that will attract Christian Americans and young male action enthusiasts, explaoding the box office in the process, but which could just be a giant mess. And having Derrickson in charge is hardly going to make people feel it might turn out ok.
As yet, there’s no news on when it might reach cinemas. (Source: Variety)
